ECONOMYNEXT - Security of United National Party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe who is disputing his removal as Prime Minister by President Maithripala Sirisena has been slashed, despite speaker Karu Jayasuriya asking his priviledges to be maintained an ally said.
Sri Lanka has been plunged into a political crisis after President Sirisena appointed Mahinda Rajapaksa as Prime Minister Friday.
The Inspector General of Police has directed that security be withdrawn and only 10 policemen remain, Harsha de Silva, a legislator said.
"Given the growing security threat on his life and various politicians threatening to eject PM from Temple Trees by using violence this is unprecedented, de Silva said in a facebook.com post.
"It is known that the MS/MR regime is planning to bring tens of thousands of their cadres to Colombo.
"With the President accusing the UNP of being party to the alleged assassination attempt this threat is even greater.
"It is ironic this is happening even after the Speaker wrote to President today requesting him to ensure PM’s security."
Speaker Karu Jayasuriya has called upon President Maithripala Sirisena to maintain priviledges of Wickremesinghe endorsing a request by his party to maintain his priviledges until parliament decides who has the majority. (Colombo/Oct29/2018)
