No decision on UNP National List MP as yet
ECONOMYNEXT – The United National Party (UNP) has not yet decided on who they will nominate to the single National List seat it won in the last Parliamentary General Elections, a party spokesman said.
The party was responding to Social Media speculation that Ranil Wickremesinghe would be the nominee.
The UNP was decimated at the election losing all the seats it contested winning only the sole National Seat.
The previous lowest was in the 1956 elections when the UNP went down to 8 seats in a 95 member Parliament.
Wickremesinghe has stayed on as leader despite the heavy defeat and is “currently consulting with the party members about a new leader,” the spokesman said.
Once a leader is found he or she will be nominated as the National List member, he added.
Meanwhile the Chief Incumbent of the Nugegoda Nalandaramaya Temple Thiniyawala Palitha Thero has called on Wickremesinghe to step down.
He and a group of pro-UNP Monks visited the UNP Headquarters Sirikotha in Kotte yesterday and asked Wickremesinghe to step down.
However the former Prime Minister who had held the leadership position for 26 years had not agreed saying that was a decision for the UNP Working Committee to take.
Speaking to Media outside Sirikotha the Thero said that former Speaker Karu Jayasuriya should take over the leadership if the UNP is to revive. (Colombo, August 20, 2020)
