Nothing will weaken anti-drugs campaign – President

No challenge, no matter how great, would stand in the way of his campaign against drugs, President Maithripala Sirisena said today.

Speaking at a discussion held at the Presidential Secretariat this morning on the rehabilitation of drug addicts, Sirisena vowed not to weaken the Government’s anti-drug drives, promising to overcome any challenge with the same resolve to fight terrorism.

Noting a link between international terror networks, weapons dealers and drug cartels, the President spoke at length on the need to defeat such forces going against the country, a statement issued by the President’s Media Division said.

Sirisena further said that the 21 April bombings occurred at a time when “much work was being carried out” to eradicate drugs. Had it not been for the attack, the statement quoted him as saying, impressive results could’ve been demonstrated by now.

The statement went to on to say that President Sirisena also discussed the need to make ongoing rehabilitation efforts more effective, while ensuring that minors in prison for drug use must be separated from hardened criminals, in order to prevent them turning to a life of crime.
