Opposition did not support the supplementary estimate as govt wanted to increase debt ceiling-Patali
ECONOMYNEXT – Former Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka said that the Opposition did not approve the Supplementary Estimate as the government wanted to increase the debt ceiling.
Speaking at an event held this afternoon, the MP said that the opposition clearly said that there is no need for new loans as a debt ceiling is already included in the Vote on Account among the other expenses.
Also, he said that the government did not give a proper reply to the request made by the opposition with regard to giving certification to the parliament that all the unpaid payments for the development projects carried by the former government are made to the contractors after the supplementary estimate is passed in parliament.
“Since there was no reply we realised that there was a hidden intention behind this supplementary estimate,” he said.
He also added that since the government has started development projects and recruitments all of a sudden with the election around the corner, it is doubtful whether this money is going to be used for development projects in 2019 or new projects.
Further, Ranawaka said that opposition does not want to stop the development projects and relief given to people, “we only objected only for increasing the debt ceiling,” he added. (Colombo, February 21,2020)
