Opposition SJB to launch anti-20th Amendment movement tomorrow

ECONOMYNEXT – The main Opposition Samagi Jana Balavegaya (SJB) will launch a protest movement against the proposed 20th Amendment to the Constitution tomorrow September 8 at the statue of the late Maduluwawe Sobhitha Thero, the party announced.

A statement from the party issued last night said the launch will take place at 4 pm at the Japan Friendship Road near the Parliament.

The SJB has called for a “broad coalition” to be formed against the government’s proposal which they say will create an all-powerful presidency and take power away from Parliament.

However, the National People’s Power group in Parliament which also opposes the 20A has ruled out an alliance with the United National Party “or any of its breakaway groups,” its spokesmen have said.

Sobhitha Thero was the iconic figure around whom the Yahapalana (Good Governance) alliance was formed which defeated Mahinda Rajapaksa in the 2015 Presidential election. (Colombo, September 7, 2020)

60% of the 6.9 million voters. would have no clue whatsoever on the 19A or 20A they just voted for hearsay sake, None was aware of the repercussions of it at the time of voting . They will only realize the consequences once implemented so it is appropriate that there is a strong oppositions to some of the clauses which are going to vest power in one person
