Pakistani asylum seeker found dead in Negombo
A 49-year-old Pakistani asylum seeker registered with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) initiative was found dead in Negombo last night with multiple cut injuries.
Negombo Police told RepublicNext the deceased had been living alone in a rented annex in the area.
The police suspects the murderer is from the same community, based on the account of a witness who had overheard an argument between the victim and another person in the same language.
A suspect has yet to be taken into custody, but investigations are under way, police said.
There are 844 refugees and 826 asylum seekers currently living in Sri Lanka, according to the UNHRC. As per the agreement between the agency and the Sri Lankan Government, asylum seekers or refugees cannot be produced before courts. Nor can any legal action be taken against them through Sri Lankan law as they are not citizens of the country.
