Pardon and release Gnanasara Thero – Hizbullah
Eastern Province Governor M. L. A. M. Hizbullah yesterday made an open request to President Maithripala Sirisena to pardon and release from prison General Secretary of the Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thero.
Speaking in a live television interview last evening, Hizbullah appealed to the President to pardon and release the controversial monk from prison, taking into account the ongoing Vesak and Ramadan season. He made particular note of the Ramadan period being known for its emphasis on forgiveness.
“We must all unite this Vesask and Ramadan season — the time for forgiveness. I urge the President to pardon Gnanasara Thero and release him from prison, on behalf of all Muslims,” he said.
Hizbullah also called for unity among communities.
“We must all unite against terrorism. More terror groups could arise in the midst of ethnic tensions. Instead of attacking Muslims, let’s talk. I’m not saying there are no problems. Let’s all sit down and have a discussion. That needs to happen. If we have grievances problems as Muslims, let’s talk about them. Let’s talk about [the controversial private university in the Eastern Province]. There can be no real solution without discussion,” he said.
Gnanasara Thero is currently serving a prison sentence for contempt of court.
