Parts of proposed Sri Lanka constitutional change need referendum: Supreme Court

COLOMBO (EconomyNext) – A proposed amendment to Sri Lanka’s constitution which will reduce presidential powers was consistent with overall document but parts of it will require a referendum, parliamentary speaker reading out a Supreme Court decision said.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe said the proposed 19th amendment will be revised to drop the the parts which require a referendum.

President Maithripala Sirisena campaigned on a platform of abolishing the executive president and strengthening the judiciary to bring back lost freedoms to citizens within 100 days of election.
