Party leaders’meeting to decide on future action
Speaker Karu Jayasuriya is saying that the leaders of political parties in Parliament will meet this week and decide on when and how the House will be dissolved, when a General Election can be held and what arrangements should be made for an interim government.
In a Media Statement released a short while ago, the leaders would have to make the following decisions, the Speaker said.
First whether the Parliament would be dissolved according to the Constitution on March 1, 2020 and the poll held sometime in April.
Second whether Parliament should by a two-thirds majority resolve to dissolve the House earlier than March 1st.
And thirdly for the Prime Minister and the government to resign voluntarily and pave the way for the President to appoint an interim government.
The Speaker said that this decision has been made after discussions with the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa other party leaders and MPs.
