The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) will present a presidential candidate who can build a disciplined nation and ensure security to all communities, Former President and Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa said.
Speaking at a Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) parliamentarians and provincial councillors group meeting in Colombo yesterday (10 July), Rajapaksa said the Government is deliberately trying to create religious divisions in the country.
Acknowledging that naming an SLPP candidate for the upcoming presidential election is entirely up to him, the former president said it is suspicious that the Government is focused on holding provincial council elections when the presidential poll is just months away.
However, he said, the SLPP is prepared to face and win any election, defeating any ulterior motives on the part of the Government.
Ex-Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam (LTTE) breakaway faction leader and Rajapaksa loyalist Karuna Amman who also spoke at the event blamed the Easter Sunday Attacks on the Government allegedly clipping the wings of the intelligence agencies.
The Tamil people, he said, along with all Sri Lankans, expect to see the involvement of Former President Rajapaksa in defeating terrorism and creating a peaceful environment for all.
