Police arrest journalist who claimed he was assaulted
ECONOMYNEXT- The Police are accusing free-lance Journalist Sujeewa Gamage of cooking up the story that he was abducted and assaulted by unknown persons on March 10 and Police Media Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana says he will be charged.
Rohana told reporters today investigations by the Meerigama police and the Colombo Crime Division (CCD) revealed that the journalist had burned his hands using a mason’s trowel in his house at Dambadeniya, Udawelawatta on the night of March 9, which was recovered by the CCD.
The spokesman said the journalist in his complaint has said that the abductors have burned his hands asking him about a pen drive.
Further, he said the statement given by the journalist about him being let off in the Maligawatta area between 1.30 and 2 am on March 10 was also found to be false as CCTV footage showed him getting down from a train at the Dematagoda railway station.
He said that it was revealed that the journalist had gone to the office in Thibirigasyaya which was owned by former MP Chathura Senaratne from Dematagoda.
The journalist then had stayed at the office for 3 hours and had met MP Rajitha Senaratne after which he had admitted himself to the National Hospital
DIG Ajith Rohana said that the journalist was arrested by the CCD for making a false complaint and will be presented before the courts today.
He also said that the CCD expects to take statements from Rajitha Senaratne and Chathura Senaratne regarding the matter. (Colombo/Mar18/2021)
