Police investigating journalist’s claim he was abducted and assaulted
ECONOMYNEXT – Police Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) is probing an allegation by journalist Sujeewa Gamage, a web journalist who says he was kidnapped, assaulted and released by a group of men.
Speaking to ECONOMYNEXT from the Colombo General Hospital, Gamage alleged that on March 10, 2021 he was kidnapped by a group of men when he got down at the Mirigama bus station on his way to Colombo.
He said he was taken from Mirigama and was tortured for over five hours. He apparently was let go in Dematagoda in Colombo.
ECONOMYNEXT has not been able to independently confirm Gamage’s assertions.
The alleged kidnappers he claims questioned him about his connection with former MP Chathura Senaratne and his other contacts and had also taken a storage chip from him.
Gamage says he has no clue who they were or why something like this happened.
He claims he suffered injuries to his hands, chest and neck.
He said a complaint was lodged through the hospital to the Dematagoda police.
The Dematagoda police told ECONOMYNEXT that a complaint was lodged via the hospital and the CCD has taken up the case for further investigation.
The news of this alleged kidnapping surfaced when opposition MP Harsha de Silva and former Speaker of Parliament Karu Jayasuriya tweeted about the alleged abduction.
Gamage contributes and runs the Siyarata News website and Patola website.
Both sites are connected to the United National Party.
Police sources said that they were investigating whether the alleged assault was connected to a private dispute.
Media watchdog agencies are yet to investigate and comment on the allegations.
