Police probing Settikulam incident where a civilian is injured in encounter with troops
ECONOMYNEXT – Police are investigating an incident where a civilian sustained injuries in an incident involving troops on patrol in the Settikulam area near the Wilpattu sanctuary last night the Army said.
The Army Spokesman Brigadier Nilantha Premaratne told EconomyNext that a civilian is injured and has been transferred to the Vavuniya hospital.
“He was in an area where normally people don’t go as it is thick jungle,” he said.
Police and the Army are awaiting permission from the injured person to find out what really happened.
It did not appear that there had been an exchange of gunfire.
Media quoted Police Spokesman Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Ajith Rohana as saying three people had opened fire at the military officers attached to the 22nd regiment last night.
The Army did not confirm that. (Colombo, February 2, 2021)
