Police to enforce polythene ban
Environmental regulations will be amended to give the police power to implement the ban on polythene, President Maithripala Sirisena said yesterday (8).
The President made this announcement in a meeting held with senior police officers at the President’s Office to discuss proposals to resolve difficulties faced by junior police officers.
The proposals had been drafted on the instructions of President Sirisena to ensure a satisfied and effective police service to attend public services.
Sirisena instructed the senior police officers to look into the welfare of the police officers and increase the health facilities and allowances given to them. He also pointed out the need for regular medical checkups to ensure a healthy police force.
According to the President’s Media Unit, discussions were also held on extending the facilities at the Police Hospital in Narahenpita. The President instructed senior officials to purchase the vacant land in front of the hospital belonging the Urban Development Authority for the expansion of the hospital.
Secretary to the President Udaya Seneviratne and secretaries of several ministries, Police Chief Pujith Jayasundara and other senior officers were present at this discussion.
