Police warn against spreading racial hatred
ECONOMYNEXT- Police spokesman Deputy Inspector General Ajith Rohana is warning people who are fear-mongering about minority communities and distracting the authorities from the fight against the spread of the COVID 19 virus.
Referring to a sound clip purported to be from an employee who has been advised by his managers against Muslims which is being shared widely, Rohana said that the Criminal Investigation Department is probing the origins of the tape.
He said that the police have identified the individuals involved in spreading audio clip and action would be taken against them.
The tape, the DIG said, claims that the Muslim community is trying to intentionally increase the spread of COVID-19 by having sexual contact with others and spitting in public places.
It adds that the State Intelligence and army are hiding it from the general public to avoid the situation getting out of control.
Rohana said because of this kind of fake news unnecessary fear and concern is created among the general public which will lead the people losing their confidence in the quarantine process.
He also said that police will arrest the identified individuals who are responsible for creating it and sharing it in social media.
Further, he said since the police have to spend their time and strength on investigating on fake news circulating on social media about COVID-19, they are losing the opportunity place their strength in other areas where it matters in the fight against COVID-19.(Colombo/Apr7/2020)
