Pope Francis says Sri Lanka Easter Sunday attacks have sown grief and sorrow
ECONOMYNEXT – Pope Francis has expressed sorrow at the Easter Sunday bombings in Sri Lanka that left at least 207 dead.
"I wish to express my heartfelt closeness to the Christian community [of Sri Lanka], wounded as it was gathered in prayer, and to all the victims of such cruel violence," Vatican news quoted Pope Francis as saying.
"I entrust to the Lord all those who have tragically perished, and I pray for the injured and all those who suffer as a result of this tragic event."
Many of the dead were Catholics at three Churches who were at Easter Sunday mass.
The Pope had said the attacks at churches and hotels have wrought grief and sorrow.
Sri Lanka’s Defence Minister Ruwan Wijewardene said at least some of the attacks were suicide bombings by an extremist group.
Officials said the attacks were unexpected in a country which had been at peace since 2009 and was just as unexpected as the attacks on New Zealand. (Colombo/Apr21/2019-SB)
