President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to address the nation at 8 pm tonight
President Gotabaya Rajapaksa will address the nation on Television tonight at 8 pm his office said.
The Director-General of Media in the Presidential Secretariat said that important government decisions taken in the course of dealing with the COVID19 crisis will be communicated to the nation during this address.
The Special Task Force on the COVID19 issue is meeting this morning at the Presidential Secretariat. Decisions taken at that meeting will also be part of the address.
Meanwhile, Opposition political parties are increasing pressure on the Elections Commission to postpone the Parliamentary General Elections fixed for April 25.
Yesterday former Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa accused the government of “not caring for the lives of Sri Lankans as it is fixated on obtaining a two-thirds majority in Parliament.”
The postponement is finally the decision of the independent National Elections Commission.
The Tamil National Alliance also wrote to the Elections Commission (EC) asking for a postponement.
Patali Champika Ranawaka, the leader of the Hela Urumaya said that the EC should base the decision on the advise of the Health Authorities.
The EC had a meeting with the Health officials yesterday.
President Rajapaksa is likely to reveal the government’s own thinking about the elections tonight.
