ECONOMYNEXT – A prisoner is dead and two others injured in a shooting incident that occurred at the Anuradhapura Prisons, hospital sources and Human Rights activists said.
Police headquarters said Police and Special Task Force officers had gone to the Prison after an attempted breakout by a group of prisoners.
Some of the inmates were on the roof of the Prison, Police said.
The Committee for the Protection of Prisoners, an activist group said that several prisoners had begun a protest today asking the authorities to protect them from the COVID19 threat in the Prison.
They said the Prison had restricted visitors and food being brought from outside as a measure to protect the prisoners from the coronavirus.
The protest had begun after that with prisoners arguing that in other countries governments had released inmates because of the virus threat.
In a tweet, its Coordinator Senaka Perera said Police had opened fire on the protestors.
