Provincial-level programme to rehabilitate drug-addicted children
A provincial-level programme to rehabilitate children under 18 years of age who are addicted to dangerous drugs will be implemented under the instructions of President Maithipala Sirisena, the President’s Media Unit (PMD) said.
According to a survey conducted by the Presidential Task Force on Drug Prevention together with the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board (NDDCB) and the Police, around 150,000 children are addicted to drugs, while 6,100 children under 18 years of age are addicted to heroin.
The survey has further revealed that nearly 100,000 people consume heroin daily out of which approximately 1,500 are women and 85,000 are men.
A total of 40,846 suspects have been arrested in connection to illegal drug trafficking during the past six months, the PMD added.
