Pujith and Hemasiri released on bail
The Colombo Chief Magistrate today released Inspector General of Police (IGP) Pujith Jayasundara and former Defence Ministry Secretary Hemasiri Fernando on surety bail of Rs. 500,000 each.
Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne said there was insufficient evidence to justify holding the two officials in remand custody any longer. Jayasundara and Fernando were arrested last week in connection with the Easter Sunday bombings, on a directive issued to Acting IGP C. D. Wickramaratne by Attorney General Dappula De Livera.
In his letter to the Acting IGP, the AG had cited serious criminal negligence on the part of Jayasundara and Fernando under Sections 296, 298, 327, 328, 329 and 410 of the penal code.
Chief Magistrate Jayaratne declared there was insufficient evidence to charge the two defendants under the aforesaid provisions.
