The Criminal Investigation Department this morning arrested the former Inspector General of Police Pujith Jaysundera for allegedly intimidating a Lift Operator at Police Headquarters in 2017.
He was arrested after a statement was recorded from him over this incident at the CID.
In the afternoon Jayasundera, who is currently on Compulsory Leave, was produced before the Fort Magistrate. He was granted bail on a surety bail of Rs 200,000 and is due to appear in court on Jan 8.
Jayasundera is embroiled in controversy after the Easter Sunday multiple suicide attacks because President Maithripala Sirisena has accused the IGP of being negligent in his duties and allowed the strike to happen.
As a consequence the President sent Jayasundera on Compulsory Leave, an action the former IGP has challenged in court.
Jayasundera has, in turn, accused the President of trying to coerce him into confessing his culpability in the Easter massacre.
