Ranil has decided to resign will issue statement later
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has decided to resign from his post, paving the way for President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to appoint an interim government.
A spokesman from Temple Trees said a short while ago that the PM has made the decision to step down and will issue a statement shortly.
United National Party members have urged the Prime Minister to quit ever since the alliance led by the party suffered a defeat at the Presidential elections held on Saturday.
MPs have said that they want the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna which won the Presidency should form the government.
UNP MPs will sit in the opposition after the Prime Minister resigns.
