Ranil promises to hand over reins to young leaders
Outgoing Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe is promising to hand over the control of the United National Party to a group of young leaders who can protect the Sinhala Buddhist base of the party.
Wickremesinghe had said this at a meeting of the Cabinet Ministers held yesterday Nov 20 at Temple Trees.
Wickremesinghe said the results of the presidential election show that the Buddhist community has lost confidence in the party and the main challenge is to build a youth leadership team that can protect the party’s Sinhala Buddhist base.
He had also urged the youth leaders of the party to take action next week to work towards a solution.
Further, he added that the reasons for the party’s defeat in the Presidential election should be analyzed and short-term and long-term plans for winning the up-coming Parliamentary elections should be made with a broad reorganization of the party.
He had also stated that he met the new President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and decided to resign from his post to allow the new president to form a government.
