Ranil, Sajith both proposed as Sri Lanka opposition leader
ECONOMYNEXT – Factions of the United National Party has proposed Ranil Wickremesinghe and Sajith Premadasa as opposition leader at meeting of the business committee of the parliament.
Speaker Karu Jayasuriya has said that the issue has to be resolved within the United National Party, a statement from the parliament said.
Jayasuriya has said it is usually the General Secretary of the largest opposition party that proposes name of the leader of the opposition.
UNP General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam had proposed Wickremesinge’s name, who has served as opposition leader since 1994 with serving as PM twice after losing a string of elections.
He has also outsourced presidential elections to third parties after losing in 2005, but has remained the leader of the United National Party.
UNP legislator Ajith Perera had also given a letter proposing Sajith Premadasa, who contested the 2019 election and lost. (Colombo/Nov22/2019)
