Ranil says UNP will never join a National Government
ECONOMYNEXT – United National Party Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has told the party faithful that he will not enter into any agreement to form a national government.
The former Prime Minister was responding to allegations that he was keeping the Grand Old Party split and confusing voters because he has a deal with the ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna to win the government a two-thirds majority at the upcoming Parliamentary elections.
“We will not join the government, we will not enter it and we will not form a national government,” Wickremesinghe told party Working Committee members gathered at the Sirikotha headquarters in Kotte today May 29.
Wickremesinghe said that the primary responsibility of all citizens is to safeguard the people from the COVID 19 pandemic.
“We as an opposition party will criticize what is wrong and support what is right. It is the responsibility of the government to safeguard the people from the pandemic,” he said.
However members of the government including Ministers are carrying on a narrow political agenda and are not accepting even the best of our proposals. This is indeed very unfortunate, Wickremesinghe said.
The main issue facing the people is not the election, it is physical safety, health and economic stability, he said.
All the political parties elected in the 2015 elections should collectively take a decision about the upcoming election and let the Elections Commission deal with it.
The government should take responsibility for the safety of the people from the pandemic, he said.
In 2015 our party won the right to form a government at the head of the United National Front.
“However after the defeat of Sajith Premadasa at the Presidential Elections we decided to hand over the government and move into the Opposition.”
Working Committee has confirmed the suspension of 99 members who obtained nominations for the upcoming election from other political parties, mostly from the Samagi Jana Balavegaya led by Premadasa.
The UNP Working Committee also ratified the appointment of 8 new WC members who were appointed on May 22nd 2020. (Colombo, May 29, 2020)
