Ricocheting police bullet injures passerby

A passerby was injured when a bullet fired by police had ricocheted off a lamppost and hit his leg, in Belummahara last night.

According to Police, a police officer stationed at a bus stop in the area on guard duty had shot in the air, supposedly to stop a suspicious looking man with a large bag who had broken into a run when asked to stop.

The bullet had hit a lamppost nearby, rebounded and hit a passerby in the leg.

The injured individual a 43-year-old resident of Weliweriya area. He is currently undergoing treatment in the Gampaha hospital for what the police called minor injuries sustained in the accident.
