Sajith demands to know why Ranjan was not brought to Parliament
ECONOMYNEXT – The Opposition is demanding to know why Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardene has not made arrangements for Samagi Jana Balavegaya (SJB) Member of Parliament Ranjan Ramanayake to attend Parliament today.
SJB leader Sajith Premadasa pointed out in Parliament today that the Chief Elections Commissioner had stated that Ramanayake will not lose his seat for the next six months.
Ramanayake has been sentenced to four years Rigorous Imprisonment for contempt of court for saying that most Judges and lawyers are corrupt.
The Attorney General has informed Parliament that Ramanayake should lose his seat under these circumstances.
Premadasa told the House Ramanayake has not been accused of crimes of either theft, corruption or drug-dealing.
“He is a popular politician seen as close to the people and someone who speaks up for the ordinary people of this country,” Premadasa said.
Observers have said that the four-year term was disproportionate to the offence.
Speaker Abeywardene asked the House for three weeks to deliver his response to Premadasa. (Colombo, January 19, 2021)
