Sajith, Karu promoted by sections of Sri Lanka’s UNF alliance
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lana’s United National Party may hold a working committee vote to select a candidate while sections of broad United National Front alliance came out in support Sajith Premadasa and Karu Jayasuriya.
Minister Lakshman Kiriella told reporters that a working committee meeting of the United National Party will be held in the next 10 days, to decide the candidate.
Earlier moves were made to come up with a candidate without confrontational vote.
Reports said an influential civil society organization, Purawesi Balakaya had indicated its support for speaker Karu Jayasuriya.
Senior UNPers have been supporting the Premadasa candidacy, while a section loyal to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had been resisting the move.
The support of the Tamil National Alliance seen is seen as crucial for Premadasa. However reports said the Tamil National Alliance was not sure of his stance on the ethnic question.
Sri Lanka Podu Jana Party has already selected its candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
Chairman of Sri Lanka’s election commission Mahinda Deshapriya told Sri Lanka’s MTV Television that the election will be held between November 15 and December 10, though not on the specific dates of November 23 and December 7.
The commission will call elections on the day its three members decide, he said. (Colombo/Sept16/2019)
