Sajith sees a gap between Gotabaya’s goals and the plans to achieve them
ECONOMYNEXT- The Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa says there is a huge gap between the goals laid out in the President’s policy statement and the plans to achieve those targets.
In Parliament today Premadasa said the opposition has nothing against the policies presented by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa but said that the government has not presented their opinion and the policy about this mismatch.
Speaking further, he said that the country today is faced with multiple economic crises and the shortage of funds in the treasury is one of them.
He pointed out that the government cut taxation.
He added that the method used by the current government to cover expenses during the first four months of this year was to take bank loans and print money.
“The economic crisis created from this is a higher inflation rate,” he said.
“So we have to question as to how the government would achieve the goals of the policy statement with that kind of inflation,” Premadasa said.
Moreover, he said with government income reducing from 13% to 8% as a percentage of the GDP and with USD 5.6 bn to be paid during the year as loan repayment how would the government archive these goals. (Colombo/Aug21/2020)
