Sajith will be proclaimed Leader of the Opposition after Throne Speech
Parliament will reconvene on January 3, when President Gotabaya Rajapaksa will address the House as the new head of state, the office of the Speaker of Parliament has announced.
After the Presidential address, Parliament will adjourn and resume sittings in the afternoon at 1 pm when the Speaker Karu Jayasuriya will announce the appointment of Sajith Premadasa as the new Leader of the Opposition.
Mahinda Rajapaksa will sit in the Prime Minister’s seat for the third time in his long political career, along with his 15-Member cabinet occupying the front seats.
The Speaker’s office said that these decisions had arrived at a discussion held between the Speaker, the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Dinesh Gunewardene who is expected to become the Leader of the House.
United National Party Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe is not expected to be there as he has taken leave.
