SB admits mistakes in the October coup
Opposition Member of Parliament S B Dissanayake is being contrite and admitting to making a mistake.
The MP who brokered the deal to make Mahinda Rajapaksa Prime Minister in October last year is saying that the mistakes that were made at the time diminished his party and its leaders.
Addressing a Press Conference in Colombo today (11) Dissanayake revealed that it was himself, Thilanga Sumathipala, Lakshman Vasantha and Dilan Perera who thought differently from the others and believed they could bring Maithripala Sirsena and Mahinda Rajapaksa together to form a government.
“We succeeded in doing so and created a new government,” the former minister said.
He pointed out that Ranil Wickremesinghe and the UNP did not challenge the Prime Minister’s dismissal in court.
“All they did was ask us to show the majority 113.The mistake we made was that instead of getting the 113 they wanted to go for a general election.”
“We must not forget that because of this mistake we stumbled, we fell. The SLPP and the SLFP as well as Mahinda Rajapaksa and Maithripala Sirisena fell and were diminished.”
“We are now picking ourselves up again” he said.
The 52 day constitutional and political crisis that was created by this move had a significant impact on Sri Lanka’s economy causing hundreds of millions of dollars of foreign investment fleeing the country.
Dissanayake added that “when we contest the election with our presidential candidate we will have Maithripala, Mahinda, Gotabaya, Basil and Dinesh all on the stage bringing all the Left leaders together.”
