Schools open Monday for Grades 6-13 everywhere except in Western Province
ECONOMYNEXT- Sri Lanka’s Schools will open throughout the country from Monday, November 23 for Grades 6-13 except for the Covid 19 hit Western Province, the Ministry of Education said.
A Ministry statement said the date was extended by two weeks from November 09, when school were originally scheduled to open after new Covid 19 positive patients were identified island-wide.
“The Ministry has given permission to open all schools except in the Western Province from November 23 for the students from grade 6 to grade 13,” the statement said.
“However, schools in Police Divisions declared isolated areas in any province will not be opened until further notice,” it added.
The Ministry said students from grade one to five will not have school due to practical issues in maintaining Covid 19 prevention guidelines for the protection of students.
The statement said, there are 6,257 schools which provide secondary education from grade 6 to grade 11 and 2,898 schools which provide education for the 12-13 Grades.
The Ministry stated, that the schools must be prepared according to the health guidelines and the Principals’ of schools will be responsible along with a committee comprising the regional Public Health Inspector, the Grama Sevaka, and the School Development representative and provide a report for the regional education director of Ministry of Education before opening schools.
Meanwhile, the Ministry stated that the postponed Ordinary Level exams are scheduled to be held on January 21, 2020.
However, because schools in the Western Province and locked down areas are closed due to the Covid 19 situation the Ministry will decide whether to amend the dates within the next two weeks.
“The Ministry will discuss the issue with the health officials and will make a decision to open schools in isolated areas for grade 11 students within the next two weeks,” the statement said.
“The health guidelines for the transport facilities of students will be also published in the next few days,” the statement said. (Colombo/ Nov 19/ 2020)
