People living in hilly areas and using those advised to be vigilant

Kodippili asked that residents in these areas, especially around the Kalu Ganga (river), be extremely vigilant.

"There can be very heavy showers or thundershowers, strong winds gusting up to 60 kilometres per hour."

According to the statement, 1,558 families have been resettled under the programme so far.

"Fairly heavy showers above 75mm can be expected elsewhere in the island," it said.

Landslides will continue to be in effect until further notice in Kegalle, Kandy and Kurunegala districts.

"Most of the deaths were due to people going for a swim or a boat ride in the flood areas," said Kodippili.

The DMC has already started to evaluate the damages to pay compensation for the affected families, he said.
