ECONOMYNEXT – President Maithripala Sirisena Wednesday removed the top civil servant at the Law and Order ministry as rift within the top police leadership came to a head.
Law and Order Secretary Jagath Jayaweera was demoted to the Fisheries ministry while Justice Ministry’s Padmasiri Jayamanne was made the new secretary of Law and Order responsible for the police department.
Under Jayaweera’s watch, senior Deputy Inspectors of General complained to the Police Commission last week that their chief Pujith Jayasundara was spying on their telephone conversations and insulting them.
President Sirisena, who is exercising his executive power in shuffling secretaries, has been unhappy about the performance of the Law and Order minister which is headed by Sagala Ratnayaka.
There had been speculation that the President had wanted to strip Ratnayaka of the crucial Law and Order ministry but had been cautious not to upset Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.
Minister Ratnayaka is also the chief of staff at the Prime Minister’s office.
In all, the President made changes to six ministries. They are Law and Order, Fisheries, Justice, Water Supply, Special Assignments and Posts. (COLOMBO, December 13, 2017)
