Shani Abeysekera interdicted
Former Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Director SSP Shani Abeysekera was interdicted effective immediately, police said.
The Police Media Division confirmed the interdiction to RepublicNext but declined to elaborate.
“The Police Commission has yet to give us the details,” a spokesman said.
It is reported that the decision to interdict Abeysekera was made over a leaked telephone conversation allegedly between him and MP Ranjan Ramayanake.
The former CID director was previously transferred by the National Police Commission in November last year as Personal Assistant to the Southern Province DIG. The transfer was made just days after the presidential election, reportedly at the request of acting IGP C D Wickremeratne.
Abeysekera personally handled several high profile cases pertaining to allegations made against members of the previous Rajapaksa government.
His name has been in the news again, as a leaked phone call purportedly between him and MP Ramanayake made headlines over the weekend. Ramanayake was taken into custody on Saturday (4) and released on bail the next day.
