Singapore PM promised to act on Mahendran: Sri Lanka President
ECONOMYNEXT – Singapore ‘s Prime Minister has promised to take action on Arjuna Mahendran, a former central bank governor wanted in connection with a securities fraud involving government bonds, Sri Lanka’s President Maithripala Sirisena said.
Mahendran is a citizen of Singapore.
President Sirisena said he brought up the matter during a one-to-one meeting with Singapore’s PM and he was assured that action will be taken if he was in Singapore.
Sirisena said this, responding to statements made in the media that since he was now the minister in charge of police, why could he not arrest and bring Mahendra to Sri Lanka to face trial.
Sirisena said a ‘Red Notice’ was issued by Interpol on Sri Lanka’s request, which was appealed by Mahendran.
"I was informed that a judge was appointed by Interpol to examine the appeal and it was rejected," he said.
The red notice was in effect.
"But we do not know where he is," Sirisena said. (Colombo/Mar06/2019-SB)
