The Sri Lanka Freedom Party fully supports President Maithripala Sirisena’s decision to appoint Lt Gen Shavendra Silva as Commander of the Army, the Party General Secretary Dayasiri Jayasekara said today 22 Aug.
Addressing a press conference in Colombo, Jayasekara said that Silva played a major role in “freeing more than a hundred thousand Tamil civilians from the LTTE,” during the last stages of the war.
He said that the comments made by the United States embassy in Colombo with regard to Lt Gen Silva’s appointment were unwarranted.
“The US and Canada want to please the Tamil diaspora as they need their votes to win elections in those countries,” Jayasekara added.
With regards to the upcoming presidential poll, Jayasekara batted away questions as to whom his party would support.
“The SLFP cannot win on its own, nor can the SLPP,” he said, adding they would support a candidate who “will align with our policies and principles.”
