SLFP wants Sirisena to contest for President
Sri Lanka Freedom Party Members of Parliament want President Maithripala Sirisena to contest the forthcoming Presidential elections.
The Presidential Secretariat is saying that the SLFP MPs handed over a plea to the President today.
In the letter, these MPs are saying that they want Sirisena to lead an anti-United National Party front.
It says that such a front will gather all “progressive forces” in the country.
Just two days ago President Sirisena told a Cabinet meeting that “if there is new leadership for the UNP,” he was willing to support them in upcoming polls.
According to multiple sources, RepublicNext spoke to Sirisena indicated that he would not contest the Presidency and he will “thereafter be quiet.”
As part of his outreach, Sirisena had said he was willing to offer the State Ministries of Law and Order and of Media to UNP MPs.
The UNP has been cool to this offer and expressly turned down the offer of a State Ministry of Law and Order.
The SLFP MPs are Nimal Siripala de Silva, Dayasiri Jayasekara, Faiszer Mustapha, Mahinda Samarasinghe, Dr. Sarath Amunugama, Ranjith Siyambalapitiya, Duminda Dissanayake, Mahinda Amaraweera, Lasantha Alagiyawanna, Dushmantha Mithrapala, Weerakumara Dissanayake, Shriyani Wijewickreme, Mohan Lal Grero and Shantha Bandara.
