SLPP ready to face legal action when MR takes up party leadership
If former President Mahinda Rajapaksa faces legal challenges when he takes over the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) leadership the party is ready to face them, party Chairman Prof.G.L Peiris said.
Addressing a press conference held at SLPP Head Office today (05 Aug), Peiris said that Rajapaksa will first receive the party leadership on August 11 at the SLPP Convention at the Sugathadsa Stadium and then declare the Presidential candidate.
Asked if Rajapaksa receiving SLPP leadership will impact his seat in the parliament or his position as the Opposition leader as he is a United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) MP, Peiris said he believes such problem will not arise and if it does, the party is ready to face it.
Commenting further, SLPP Chairman said that at present, a total of 23 minor parties are supporting SLPP for the upcoming presidential elections and some other parties will also join SLPP in the coming days.
