SLPP will get two-thirds majority with the assistance of allied parties – Chandrapala Wijepala
ECONOMYNEXT – The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna and its allies will reach a two-thirds majority at the end of the night, a senior party spokesman said.
Chandrapala Wijepala, the former Director-General Media for Mahinda Rajapaksa when he was President told EconomyNext that the magic figure will be reached with the assistance of the party’s allies in the North, East and the Plantation regions.
Wijepala pointed to allies in the North such as the Eelam People’s Democratic Party and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party who will win two to three seats. In the East, he said, the party of A L M Athaullah and the Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Puligal led by Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan better known by his LTTE nom de guerre “Pillayan” would join.
“No single party has got a two-thirds majority under the proportional system and we will get it,”
Wijepala said that the election this year was “peaceful and state media was not misused by the government.”
He also claimed that the private media was unbiased. However, the Samagi Jana Balavegaya leader Sajith Premadasa accused Derana TV of distorting reports about his campaign.
Wijepala also said that it showed that the Sri Lankan electorate had matured. “There was a time when elections saw a lot of violence. But now there are no incidents of that nature,” he said.
Out of the results of the 120 electoral districts that have been released the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna has won around 60 per cent of the votes counted so far.
The second-placed SJB is making a strong showing in the Colombo district.
Except for the minority-dominated North and East, the ruling party appears to be winning almost every seat in the majority Sinhalese Buddhist regions of the island. (Colombo, August 6, 2020)
