Social media to be unblocked
President Maithripala Sirisena has issued a directive to the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) to remove the block on several social media sites with immediate effect.
According to a statement issued by the Government Information Department, Sirisena has requested an immediate lift on the ban of all social media and instant messaging platforms including Facebook, WhatApp, Instagram, YouTube and Viber.
The above services were blocked by the TRC in the immediate aftermath of the Easter Sunday bombings to prevent the propagation of rumours.
The statement said that, despite the lifting of the ban, the President has urged the public to act responsibly when using social media.
