Some SLFP members would be useful for UNP – MP Marikkar
UNP Parliamentarian S.M Marikkar says he believes that if there are members of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) capable of getting people’s votes join the United National Party (UNP) it would be useful.
Addressing a press conference held at Temple Trees this morning (23 July), Marikkar said that the SLFP members know that putting forward a presidential candidate from the party is pointless.
“The majority of them (SLFP members) know that if they join SLPP, they will be defeated as it happened before. So they will join a party which will give them a positive response,” he said.
Asked if Sajith Premadasa’s name was proposed as the Presidential candidate during yesterday’s Parliamentary Group meeting, Marikkar said Minister Kabir Hasheem said that the common people prefer Sajith Premadasa and some MPs proposed his name.
“However, that is not the final decision. After the 5th of August, the presidential candidate will be decided considering the majority’s opinion. We are not selecting the presidential candidate like some select the presidential candidate at the Rajapaksa’s dining table. As a democratic party, we will listen to everyone’s opinion. Whoever the candidate will be, our campaign we are a winning campaign,” the MP added.
