ECONOMYNEXT- Some of the blasts across Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday which had killed over 200 people were suicide bombings, State Minister for Defence Ruwan Wijewardena said Sunday evening.
He said three policemen were killed during a raid at a residence in the Colombo suburb of Dematagoda.
"We know some extremists are behind this," Wijewardene told reporters in Colombo.
However, the name of the group will be withheld for the moment, in order to minimize public unrest, he said.
"We do not want to have communal problems, so we need your support," he said.
Defence Secretary Hemasiri Fernando urged calm from the public as well.
"We don’t want to point fingers at anyone, but similar things have happened in New Zealand, which is a peaceful country," he said. The New Zealand killings were at Muslim mosques during Friday prayers.
Police Spokesman Ruwan Gunasekara said three suspects have so far been arrested, while more were questioned.
