ECONOMYNEXT – A seven-member committee has been appointed to investigate the tense situation that occurred in Sri Lanka’s parliament yesterday, Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena said.
“What happened yesterday was unfortunate. It’s something we should all be ashamed of,” he said.
The Speaker was referring to a fracas that broke out in parliament yesterday when government MPs were trying to attack main opposition Samagi Jana Balavegaya (SJB) MP Harin Fernando.
The Speaker said this morning that he will take action against the MPs responsible based on the recommendations of the committee.
The committee will comprise seven senior MPs, he said, but did not specify which parties they will represent.
Government MPs were displaying placards in the lobby yesterday, accusing the previous government of being unable to prevent the Easter attack. SJB lawmakers meanwhile were dressed in black, demanding justice for the victims of the bombings. The party had repeatedly accused the government of delayed justice and lapses in its probe.
The chaos that followed was live-streamed by a number of MPs both from the government and the opposition, leading to much public commentary and criticism.
Yesterday marked the second anniversary of the Easter attack which claimed 269 lives and injured over 500. (Colombo/Apr22/2021)
