Special Assistant launches savage attack on Sri Lanka PM
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s "Special Assistant" has quit after launching a savage attack ahead of next month’s no-confidence motion.
The once powerful Sudath Chandrasekara announced the resignation after 33 years of service in a seven-page letter tearing into Wickremesinghe and making a series of allegations ranging from arrogance, indifference, cronyism and incompetence.
Chandrasekara was bitter that he had been relegated to a lowly position as "Special Assistant" without any responsibilities at the United National Party (UNP) headquarters after being a top aide to Wickremesinghe for decades.
Among the key charges is Wickremesinghe’s alleged failure to reward supporters and help those who stood by the party at difficult times.
Political sources said the resignation may have been induced by a political rival ahead of the April 4 no-confidence motion against Wickremesinghe.
“This is a dustbin toppling letter. It cannot do any good for the Prime Minister,” a political observer said.
Chandrasekara had joined Wickremesinghe security unit as a police constable and rose to the rank of an inspector before quitting the department and becoming a full time aide and UNP workers.
Chandrasekara signed off the letter as "ONE MAN GOD." (ECONOMYNEXT, March 23, 2018)
