Speculation rises over Sri Lanka’s next central bank governor

ECONOMYNEXT – With Sri Lanka’s central bank Governor Indrajit Coomaraswamy due to step down on December 20, speculation is rising over his replacement with several names being mentioned in financial circles.

Many of Sri Lanka’s past central bank governors have been career officers from the institution itself.

However with the appointment of Sunil Mendis, a top business executive by then President Chandrika Kumaratunga, outsiders have been bought in.

In addition to Nandalal Weerasinghe, the current deputy governor, former Deputy Governors Ranee Jayamaha and C P J Siriwardene’s names are being mentioned.

Ranjith Bandara, a former head of Sri Lanka Foundation Institution is also being mentioned as a possible candidate. (SB-Colombo/Dec02/2019)
