S’pore Law & Home Affairs Minister calls on Prez, discusses cyber security, hate speech laws

Cyber security, hate speech laws, social media intelligence, and biometrics were among a wide range of topics discussed between visiting Singapore Law and Home Affairs Minister Kasiviswanathan Shanmugam and President Gotabaya Rajapaksa yesterday.

Shanmugam called on Rajapaksa at the Presidential Secretariat yesterday as part of his three-day official visit to Sri Lanka.

A statement from the President’s Office said the discussion focused primarily on improving bilateral relations in areas of trade investment.

Countering terrorism, cyber security, curbing extremism, threats from foreign influences and interferences, and improving intelligence were also discussed, according to the statement.

Other areas touched on included newly introduced hate speech legislation in Singapore, online disinformation, a Maintenance of Religious Harmony Act, and social media intelligence models used by businesses for data management.

New technologies that Singapore is currently exploring in terms of Irrefutable Identification that combines both fields of digital and biometric also came up in the discussions, the President’s Office added.
