Sri Lanka allows China City to protect reclaimed area
COLOMBO (EconomyNext) – Sri Lanka has allowed the China City company to build barriers to protect sections of land already reclaimed from the sea, Cabinet spokesman Rajitha Senaratne said.
The will allow CHEC Port City Colombo (Pvt) Ltd, to cover vulnerable areas with temporary armour layers.
The firm will also be allowed to continuously monitor the area and remove accumulating sand near the Beira lake outfall to prevent it being blocked.
There is also a submarine telecom cable nearly which could be damaged if rock from partly constructed breakwater and revetment falling off due to high waves.
The firm has been allowed to build a 50 meter breakwater and place temporary amour layers before the monsoon period starts in May.
Sri Lanka halted work in the 1.4 billion dollar China City project citing environmental concerns and lack of approvals.
