Sri Lanka appoints committee to take China Port City forward
COLOMBO (EconomyNext) – Sri Lanka has appointed high level committee to correct lapses and allow work to continue on a China City to be built next to the main port in Colombo, a cabinet spokesman Minister Rajitha Senaratne said.
Secretary to the Prime Minister will chair the committee, which will also have as members, secretaries of the ministries of Ports and Shipping, Urban Development and Water Supply, Environment and a senior counsel from the Attorney General’s department.
The committee will look in to completing environmental studies and the adoption of protective measures.
Studies were also needed on water supplies, sewerage and power to the China City.
There was also a need to protect work already completed maintain the outlet from the Beira Lake.
The China City is to be built on land reclaimed from the sea, a project which was suspended by the new administration on environmental concerns raised in the pre-election period.
An earlier attempt to revive the project met with a public outcry.
