ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s merchandise exports fell 16.15 percent to 814.1 million US dollars in April 2023 compared to the same period last year as declining trend for the export products persisted, the Export Development Board (EDB) said.
“Declining trend in merchandise exports further continues due to the negative trends shown in major export products: Apparel & Textiles, Rubber & Rubber based products and Coconut & Coconut based products,” the EDB said in a statement.
The cumulative exports from January to April this year have declined by 9.8 percent to 3,8 billion US dollars compared to the same period last year, the EDB data showed.
Export earnings from Apparel & Textile have fallen 23.1 percent to 342.81 million US dollars in April, Rubber and Rubber Finished products decreased 22.3 percent, to 55.4 million US dollars, Pneumatic & Retreated Rubber Tyres down 22.1 percent, and Tubes as well as Industrial & surgical gloves lost 24.3 percent.
Kernel products fell 31.71 percent in April, fiber products by 16.2 percent, sand hell products by 30.4 percent.
Apart from these, Liquid Coconut Milk, Coconut Oil, Desiccated Coconut, Coco Peat, Fiber Pith & Moulded products, Activated Carbon, Spices and Essential Oils, ]pepper, and Transport & Logistics goods also fell in Aprril.
Analysts cite the looming recession in Sri Lanka’s main export destinations as the key reason for the decline in the exports.
Export revenue from key products like tea, seafood, Electrical & Electronics Components, Ornamental fish, and Cinnamon have increased in April while the value of ICT exports is estimated to have increased by 35 percent to 529 million US dollars in April 2023, compared to the same month last year, the EDB said.
